Executive Summary

Buy Uganda, Build Uganda (BUBU) is a government policy that was approved by Cabinet in

2014 and launched in 2017 to promote the consumption and procurement of goods and services produced locally. This will encourage foreign and local investors to produce locally; improve capacity of local producers to supply government, enhance the quality and competitiveness on the local and international market, create jobs and drive the country to achieve middle Income status.

The BUBU Expo Project

The BUBU Expo is an annual three (3) day event under a Private-Public Partnership between the Ministry of Trade and Cooperatives (MTIC) and Investment Review Publications

aimed at promoting Buy Uganda Build Uganda (BUBU) by:

  1. Providing a platform to market all goods and services Made in Uganda.
  2. Causing mindset change in Uganda towards locally made products
  3. Enhancing networking and coordination around the BUBU policy.

4.   Supporting local producers access cheap and patient capital.

5.   Encouraging and building patriotism in the public.

The 1st Buy Uganda Build Uganda BUBU Expo held 7-9th March 2019 at Kololo Airstrip attracted 350 exhibitors, 45 sponsors in various categories and hosted 500 delegates to the BUBU Expo Awards Gala Dinner. (www.bubuexpo.com)

The 2nd BUBU Expo is expected to take place at Kololo Airstrip (exhibition, conferences, and awards dinner) May 6th -8th 2022.

The first day Friday 6th May 2022, of the event will have the Guest of Honor H.E The President of Uganda opening the BUBU EXPO 2022 with a tour of the exhibition space. That will be followed by speeches from a cross section of stakeholders in Government and the private sector.

The second day Saturday 7th May 2022 will start and continue with several conferences i.e BUBU CapitalNetwork Conference, Standards Conference, Taxation conference and Public Procurement conference (specific subjects to be communicated later) aimed at supporting local producers and enabling easy access to the relevant Government experts, private sector experts and networking. Conferences open for sponsorship.

The third day 8th May 2022 will feature the BUBU Women’s Conference. This day will put the focus on Women Entrepreneurship. (The specific subjects of discussion will be communicated later). The BUBU EXPO 2022 will climax with the BUBU Awards and Gala Dinner. The Awards Dinner and Conference are open for sponsorship.

The BUBU EXPO Awards will target

  1. Compliant Government Ministries, Departments and Agencies (Consuming goods & services Made in Uganda)
  2. Production Capacity: Companies & Organizations that have increased their production capacity for reliable supply
  3. Quality Standards: Companies and Organizations that ensure environmental standards are adhered to in their production process

The winners will be awarded at the BUBU EXPO AWARDS GALA DINNER by the Chief Guest- THE RT. HON. PRIME MINISTER OF THE REPUBLIC OF UGANDA, on the final day of the event (Sunday 8th May 2022)

The Organising Committee

The Committee is chaired by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives MTIC, supported by the Investment Review Publications Ltd (IRP), it is also comprised of Uganda Investment Authority (UIA), Uganda Revenue Authority (URA), Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB), Uganda Manufacturers’ Association(UMA), Private Sector Foundation(PSFU), Public Procurement & Disposal of Public Assets Authority(PPDA), Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS), Ministry of  Defense & Veteran Affairs, Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning.

Expected Results

  1. Visibility of all goods and services produced in Uganda at the exhibition.
  2. Mind-set change towards ‘Made in Uganda’ products and services
  3. Mass awareness of all products and services Made in Uganda
  4. Promotion of all goods and services made in Uganda through the various channels that will be promoting (electronic, print media et al) the event.
  5. Deep engagement and networking among producers, investors, Government agencies and the public
  6. Recognition of BUBU manufacturers, producers, investors, and Government MDAs supporting BUBU who have excelled in their various categories in terms of quality, building capacity to compete on the local and international markets and adherence to the BUBU policy
  7. Strengthening of the BUBU EXPO platform for the public to appreciate and support the BUBU Policy.
  8. Opportunities for testing, learning, critiquing, and buying the goods and services (Made in Uganda)
  9. Valuable feedback from investors and the public on how to improve Governments’ business focused services and the BUBU policy.
  10. Motivation for manufacturers, producers and Government to improve quality and capacity to compete with imported products.
  11. Opportunities for SMEs to mobilize capital and network with capital providers during the BUBU Expo 2022.
  12. Government will be appreciated by producers, investors especially SMEs, for creating a platform to showcase, network, engage with Government, and create markets for Made in Uganda products.

Conclusion

The BUBU Expo is now one of the biggest events on the Ugandan calendar where Made in Uganda goods and services are displayed, viewed, and purchased by thousands of Ugandans who flock to Kololo Independence Grounds and millions view the activities over the various media platforms that cover the event.
